In human society and its environment (HSIE), both subjects of history and geography are mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.
A large number of individual subjects make up the key learning area of HSIE in which students:
HSIE subjects and diciplines challenges students to develop a strong work ethic and to value lifelong learning, empathy and informed citizenship. Alongside the mandatory history and georgraphy courses, Queanbeyan High offers Year 9 and 10 electives such as commerce, Aboriginal Studies, History Elective and International Studies.
In Year 11 and 12, students can choose from a range of HSIE courses. These include.

HSIE offers Geography, History, Commerce, Work Education and Aboriginal Studies, Ancient History, Modern History, Business Studies, Economics, Legal Studies, and Society and Culture. Excursions consistently offered are Sydney Jewish Museum, Sydney University HTA lectures, The Nicholson Museum, Sydney University, The Museum of Ancient Cultures, Macquarie University, The Australian War Memorial, Canberra, Surf Beach, Bateman's Bay, Canberra Mosque, three overseas excursions have been organised over the past 8 years which have catered to students studying Ancient and Modern History in Stage 6.
